Chair for Biogenic Polymers
Founded as an professorship in October 2011 at the former Science Center Straubing (WZS), the chair for Biogenic Polymers at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) under Professor Cordt Zollfrank develops novel structural and functional materials based on renewable raw materials.
Employees, doctoral students and students of the chair work as an interdisciplinary team from the fields of renewable resources (NaWaRo), materials science, chemistry and physics, hand in hand on various topics of materials science. The focus is on the development of biomacromolecules and their conversion into composite materials for technical and biomedical applications, including novel bioplastics.
As professor, Cordt Zollfrank studied chemistry at the Technical University of Munich. He then moved to the Institute for Wood Research in Munich, where he received his doctorate in forest sciences with a thesis on wood chemistry. Later, as a scientific assistant, he established the working group “Biotechnical Ceramics and Biomaterials” and habilitated in 2009 in the field of materials science. On October 1, 2011, he was appointed Professor for the subject area “Biogenic Polymers” at the Technical University of Munich at the former Straubing Science Center. As part of the TUM-internal “Leuchturmverfahren”, the professorship was converted into a chair on December 1, 2020.
