TUM.wood

A network for research and teaching on wood as a material

TUM.wood is a cooperation of seven professorships at the Technical University of Munich, which deal with the topic of wood at various levels. The unifying vision is to make greater use of the material’s potential, to strengthen its contribution to the responsible use of available resources, and to show the way into a new age of wood. The technical, architectural, ecological and economic possibilities of the most important renewable resource are investigated along the entire value chain – from its origin in the forest to its processing, from its application in construction to recycling strategies. The intersections in terms of content between the participating partner chairs form the communicative basis for cooperation. The spectrum ranges from forestry to materials research on wood, wood-based materials and biogenic polymers, from the investigation of innovative building constructions to the development of material-oriented building typologies of contemporary wood architecture.

The objective

The added value for research and teaching can be seen in interdisciplinary projects on fundamentals and applications. An interdisciplinary range of courses also offers new development potential for students of other disciplines. The training of young scientists in the field of forestry and wood is strengthened. The partnership represents a bundling of competences for questions from science, architecture, forestry and timber industry and construction practice. It intensifies the social perception of wood as a resource. Existing obstacles to the further development of the use of wood are localised and tackled. A central information point for the professional world and beyond for authorities, politics and media is created.
